The best part of camping for most children is not the tent, it is the freedom. These ideas need almost no equipment and work for a wide range of ages.
Daytime outdoor ideas
- Nature bingo. Tick off a feather, a pine cone, a ladybird, a puddle and more. Download our free printable bingo card below.
- Scavenger hunt. Make a list of things to find: something smooth, something spiky, something yellow, something that makes a noise.
- Bug hunt. A magnifying glass and a bug pot let children look closely, then release the creatures where they found them.
- Den building. Only where the site allows it, and using fallen branches, never living trees.
- Bikes and scooters. Many sites have quiet roads or tracks. Bring helmets.
- Kites, frisbees and football. A tried-and-tested trio.
- Cloud spotting and nature photography. A good challenge for older children with a phone or camera.
- Leaf rubbings. Paper and crayons are all you need.
